چکیده

We present a finite element analogue to the second-order, finite difference scheme for the solution of the heat diffusion equation in strongly magnetised plasmas given in Günter et al. [S. Günter et al., J. Comp. Phys. 209 (2005) 354]. Compared to standard finite element or finite difference formulations it strongly reduces the pollution of perpendicular heat fluxes by parallel ones even without resorting to field-aligned coordinates. We present both bi-linear and bi-quadratic versions of this scheme as well as a fourth-order extension of the original difference scheme of Günter et al. (2005). In the second part of the paper, we address the formulation of the boundary conditions at walls with an oblique incidence of field lines and the treatment of the coordinate singularity at r = 0 in cylindrical, or topologically equivalent coordinates with the reduced-pollution finite difference scheme. All tests shown indicate that both the finite-difference and the finite-element versions of the scheme should substantially alleviate the requirement for field-alignment of the coordinates over the realistic range of vi/v^ in toroidal magnetic confinement devices. 2007 Elsevier Inc. Unstructured Meshes and Finite Elements in Space Plasma Modelling: Principles and Applications

This chapter describes the general principles of unstructured mesh generation in two and three dimensions, together with the use of finite elements in modelling space plasmas. Particular attention is given to the requirement of generating meshes that are aligned along magnetic field lines, in order to properly capture the strong anisotropy of magnetised plasmas. Example results are given in 2D ...

A boundary element/finite difference analysis of subsidence phenomenon due to underground structures

Analysis of the stresses, displacements, and horizontal strains of the ground subsidence due to underground excavation in rocks can be accomplished by means of a hybridized higher order indirect boundary element/finite difference (BE/FD) formulation. A semi-infinite displacement discontinuity field is discretized (numerically) using the cubic displacement discontinuity elements (i.e. each highe...

Studying thermal effects of laser on tissue using implicit finite volume method

In this paper, thermal effects of laser irradiance on biological tissue is investigated using computer simulations. Earlier attempts in this field made use of finite difference and finite element techniques. Here a novel approach is adopted to improve the results. The effect of our implicit approach on the convergence procedure and accuracy of results, with different timing steps, is explor...

Modelling the catalyst fragmentation pattern in relation to molecular properties and particle overheating in olefin polymerization

A two-dimensional single particle finite element model was used to examine the effects of particle fragmental pattern on the average molecular weights, polymerization rate and particle overheating in heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta olefin polymerization. A two-site catalyst kinetic mechanism was employed together with a dynamic two-dimensional molecular species in diffusion-reaction equation. The i...

A mixed implicit-explicit finite difference scheme for heat transport in magnetised plasmas

An explicit/implicit domain decomposition method is applied to the time-dependent heatconduction problem in a 2-d, strongly anisotropic medium (a magnetized plasma), using a formulation of the spatial derivatives which avoids the pollution of perpendicular by parallel heat fluxes. The time-stepping at the sub-domain boundaries is done using a DuFort-Frankel scheme, which leads to a time step li...
